Finding the Subluxation
By Joshua J. Lawlor, DC
“Find it, fix it, leave it alone.” the infamous line by, Andrew Stills, D.O., Ph.C. 1910, as Dr. Richard Burns clarified to students during a November philosophy night lecture to about 80 students and chiropractors in Park View, Iowa. Implemented, used, and mastered by Dr. Gonstead himself, “T” (Dr. J. Larry Troxell) would regularly say he would have been happy to fix most anything if Dr. Gonstead would find it. Fixing the subluxation was easy according to T. Finding it, that was the difficult part he’d tell me. Dr. Burns also pointed out that Dr. Gonstead’s growth as a CHIROPRACTOR added; “Find it, accept it where you find it, fix it, and leave it alone.”
We all know a sub-par or even poor adjustment on the right bone would respond better than a deep set on the wrong bone hands down. And with the right bone, in the right direction, on the right table, with the right torque, right force, and at the right time, boy oh boy ….You may just deliver a “damn good one.”
B
ut how do we deliver a “damn good one”, if we aren’t able to find it, the subluxation? Or if we do find the bone, but don’t know which direction to move it, what table to move it on, the why behind moving it, or the understanding of when to stop!
As GMI finished the extremity seminar in Mt. Horeb this past weekend, the panel of chiropractors was asked what to do with a case when assistance may be needed in management. Dr. O’Hara’s response, “call T.” For years the answer was, “call Dr. Gonstead.” We have all called on colleagues and mentors to help guide us in the all important questions; “what should I do?”, and “where should I adjust?”, and “how should I set it,” etc.
It seems of late, I’ve had the question posed to me; what does it take to become a successful chiropractor? I learned from a patient: he said:
1. Love what you do.
2. Work hard every day to get better.
3. Be willing to change.
Isn’t that what Dr. Gonstead did?
Quickly approaching is a weekend to do just that. January 29th and 30th, 2012, a seminar comes to Park View, Iowa, called “Finding the Subluxation”. The seminar will be hosted by GMI and taught by 4 Chiropractor’s who exemplify success because of their implementation of the above characteristics.
Finding the subluxation:
Dr. Gary Pennebaker: Philosophy
Dr. Dennis O’Hara: Static Palpation
Dr. Roger Kasperbauer: Instrumentation
Dr. Dan Lyons: Motion Palpation
Register at gonsteadmethodologyinstitute.com; or call 563-285-8230 ask for Holly. This seminar may need to be capped so register soon!
We live in such an exciting time, because the enablers of Chiropractic mediocrity are running so rampant in our profession. Discouraging, yes, but there is no better time for Gonstead chiropractors to step to the plate and continue fixing people. Chiropractic is needed, you are needed, and now is the time!
